Pintxos and Modern Red Riojas

The wines you read about in previous pages are mostly traditional styles of Rioja wines. In the last couple decades, some winemakers have been breaking away from more traditional winemaking rules, resulting in what are commonly called “High Expression Wines”.

These bold wines, which can be made from a single grape or from blends, express more of the grapes’ berry fruit flavor than the traditional styles of red Riojas, and are often aged a much shorter time in oak. Often they reflect the new world-style of wines, but they originate from ancient old-world vines.

In this next video, Adrian and Patxi discuss the versatility of one High Expression Rioja, and how it pairs well with the three last Pintxos.
